Egress windows are required in all basement bedrooms. These units are designed to offer a safe and easy exit in case of a fire or other emergency. Egress windows can also be an attractive addition to your basement, providing your space with natural light and cutting down on energy usage.
When you work with Stratum Structural Systems to finish or remodel your basement, we can help you pick the right egress windows to complement your home’s aesthetic and ensure your family’s safety. Our estimators and work crew are seasoned in installing egress windows and take part in ongoing, continuing education about IRC codes and municipal requirements. The Code requires that egress windows meet the following requirements:

Benefits of a Vertical Egress Window
A vertical window is a more traditional style in which the operating section lifts -- you guessed it -- vertically to allow for egress. Vertical windows fit well in traditional spaces with large window wells. In order to reach the minimum opening area, the opening pane must clear 24 inches top to bottom and be at least 34 inches wide. The whole window will therefore need to be at least 48 inches high. Because of these size requirements, this type of window is not suitable for all basements. If you’re working with a deep window well, a vertical window may be right for you.
